The Virtual Standardized Patient Simulated Patient-Practitioner Dialogue for Patient Interview Training
نویسندگان
چکیده
We describe the Virtual Standardized Patient (VSP) application, having a computerized virtual person who interacts with medical practitioners in much the same way as actors hired to teach and evaluate patient assessment and interviewing skills. The VSP integrates technologies from two successful research projects conducted at Research Triangle Institute (RTI). AVA TALKTM provides natural language processing, emotion and behavior modeling, and composite facial expression and lip-shape modeling for a natural patient-practitioner dialogue. Trauma Patient Simulator (TPS) provides case-based patient history and trauma casualty data, real-time physiological modeling, interactive patient as sessment, 3-D scenario simulation, and instructional record-keeping capabilities. The VSP offers training benefits that include enhanced adaptability, availability, and assessment.

Combining CNNs and Pattern Matching for Question Interpretation in a Virtual Patient Dialogue System
For medical students, virtual patient dialogue systems can provide useful training opportunities without the cost of employing actors to portray standardized patients. This work utilizes wordand character-based convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for question identification in a virtual patient dialogue system, outperforming a strong wordand characterbased logistic regression baseline. While t...

متن کاملStandardized patients versus simulated patients in medical education: are they the same or different
In order to equip medical students with all the necessary skills in dealing with patients to provide optimal treatment, the need for the use of real patients in educational settings has become prominent. But all the required skills cannot be practiced on real patients due to patients’ safety and well-being. Thus, the use of standardized patients (SPs) or simulated patients (SiPs) as a substitut...

Interactive computer generated characters can be applied to the medical field as virtual patients for clinical training. The user interface for the virtual characters takes on the same appearance and behavior as a human. To assess if these virtual patients can be used to train skills such as interviewing and diagnosis they need to respond as a patient would. The primary goal of this study was t...
